Kamala Harris as Joe Biden’s running mate in the 2020 US presidential election

Kamala Harris: The article examines Biden’s VP pick and how it was historic for a major party in the United States.

Democratic presidential hopeful Joe Biden disclosed Senator Kamala Harris of California as his Vice President come 2020 on August 11th 2020. His selection of Harris makes history – she is the first Black woman and the first South Asian American woman to be on a national ticket as a vice presidential nominee.

Harris has been an active Senator for California since January 2017 and is 55 years of age. Before her election to the Senate, she was the fifty-ninth Attorney General of California, 2011-2017 and District Attorney of San Francisco, 2004-2011. Described in the media as an uncompromising liberal, Harris received a wide attention after her sharp remarks during the Senate hearings.

Kamala is a great pick for Biden to bring the change, and diversity to the Democratic ticket. Compared to 77 year old Biden, she is quite young and is known for being a tenacious debater. Having worked as a prosecutor, her experience is seen as beneficial to the campaign especially in light of accusations made by President Trump that Biden is “soft on crime. ”

Joe Biden and Kamala Harris have ideological differences, and while Harris is more left-wing, Biden positions himself as a centrist. Harris famously engaged Biden during the initial rounds of the Democratic debates about his past position on federally required busing to implement desegregation in schools. The two seem to have reconciled from their major disagreements, presenting a united front for the purpose of defeating Donald Trump.

As stated above, with Trump polling poorly against Biden, the Biden-Harris ticket gives Democrats a rich and diverse field of candidates with vast experience and energy as they approach the November elections. Harris as the Vice President would also form a perfect candidate to succeed Biden should he decide not to seek another term in office. Her selection acknowledges the changes in the political landscape where black women have become more influential in the democratic party.
